Mango Sago

By James Rotanson

Chinese · Dinner · Easy · 40 min · 6 ingredients

A refreshing and creamy Hong Kong-style dessert featuring sweet mangoes, chewy sago pearls, and a silky coconut base.

Ingredients

  • 0.5 cup small sago pearls
  • 2 large ripe mangoes, diced
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 0.5 cup evaporated milk
  • 3 tbsp sugar or condensed milk
  • 4 cups water for boiling

Steps

  1. Bring water to a boil in a large pot, add sago pearls, and cook for 10 to 15 minutes until mostly translucent.
  2. Turn off the heat, cover the pot, and let the sago sit for 10 minutes until fully clear.
  3. Drain the sago pearls and rinse thoroughly under cold running water to remove excess starch.
  4. Place half of the diced mangoes in a blender with coconut milk, evaporated milk, and sugar; blend until smooth.
  5. In a large bowl or individual serving cups, combine the mango puree with the cooked sago pearls.
  6. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, then serve topped with the remaining mango chunks.
