Simple Homemade White Bread

By James Rotanson

Dinner · Easy · 2 min · 6 ingredients

A classic, soft white loaf that is perfect for sandwiches or toasting with butter.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups warm water
  • 2 tbsp white sugar
  • 2.25 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour

Steps

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water and stir in yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until it looks foamy.
  2. Mix the salt and oil into the yeast mixture. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch the dough down and shape it into a loaf. Place it into a greased 9x5 inch loaf pan.
  6. Allow the dough to rise again for 30 to 45 minutes.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 30 to 35 minutes until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
